Speedrunning Part 1: It Begins

Hey Guys, I’m Chris, and for the last 6 years I’ve been obsessed with watching speed-runs and keeping up to date with such on-goings through /r/speedrunning and SpeedDemoArchives. The entire time I’ve been sitting on the fence about making the commitment and picking up a game to learn, but after much deliberation I’ve decided to take the plunge and pick a game. So would you kindly join me as I record my plight and joys through speed-running.

A speed-run is a play-through (or a recording thereof) of a video game performed with the intention of completing a goal as fast as possible, most often to complete the game. Speed-runs may cover a whole game or a selected part (such as a single level) and may impose additional requirements beyond quick completion. They are mainly attempted for the purposes of entertainment and competition. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/speedrun)

Part 1: Picking a Game

Picking a game to speed-run isn’t as simple as closing your eyes and tossing a dart at your steam library (I highly do not recommend this by the way). You need to choose a game that you know you will never get bored of, something you know that will never become old, because you are going to see those first 10 minutes more times than you will remember. Because of this I have chosen Bioshock Infinite. The Bioshock franchise is my favorite series, for the writing, the gameplay and the environment. Its third installment; Bioshock Infinite is, for me, the perfect combination of these aspects (I’m sorry rapture but your time will come). When you decide to choose your game another thing to consider is whether or not there is an active community. While you can run any game that you wish one of the best things about speed-running is its competitiveness, which in turn powers your engine to achieve the best time possible.

I leave you for now with a video of the current world record holder (at the time of writing) and I hope you choose to join me on my journey of persistence, rage, love, frustration and most of all, triumph.
